چکیده

We present JHK s photometry of 10 Jovian and 4 Saturnian irregular satellites, taken with the Near-InfraRed Imager (NIRI) at the 8-m Gemini North Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The observed objects have near-infrared colors consistent with C, P and D-type asteroids, although J XII Ananke and S IX Phoebe show weak indications of possible water features in the H filter. The four members of the Himalia-family have similar near-infrared colors, as do the two members of the Gallic family, S XX Paaliaq and S XXIX Siarnaq. From low resolution normalized reflectance spectra based on the broadband colors and covering 0.4μm to 2.2μm, the irregular satellites are identified as C-type (J VII Pasiphae, J VI Himalia and S IX Phoebe), P-type (J XII Ananke and J XVIII Themisto) and D-type (J IX Carme and J X Sinope), showing a diversity of origins of these objects. Subject headings: planets and satellites: (Albiorix, Ananke, Calirrhoe, Carme, Elara, Himalia, Leda, Lysithea, Paaliaq, Pasiphae, Phoebe, Siarnaq, Sinope, Themisto) Visiting Astronomer, Gemini North Oberservatory

Whole Disk Observations of Jupiter, Saturn and Mars in Millimeter–Submillimeter Bands

Whole disk brightness ratios for Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars are reported at 5.7, 9.5, 16.4, and 22.5 cm. Using models for the brightness temperature of Mars, the whole disk brightness temperatures for Jupiter and Saturn are also given for the four frequencies. Subject headings: balloons — cosmic microwave background — infrared: solar system — planets and satellites: individual (Jupiter, Mars, Sa...

Implications for the Origin of Jovian Irregular Satellites from Reflectance

Introduction: Recent dynamical studies of Solar System evolution advance our understanding of the physical distribution of objects out through the Kuiper Belt. In the Nice model [1,2,3], the Jovian planets experienced a violent reshuffling event ~3.9 Gyr ago. In this process, gravitational interaction with planetesimals leaving the planetesimal disk induced slow planetary migration in the jovia...

A deeper look at the colors of Saturnian irregular satellites

We have performed broadband color photometry of the twelve brightest irregular satellites of Saturn with the goal of understanding their surface composition, as well as their physical relationship. We find that the satellites have a wide variety of different surface colors, from the negative spectral slopes of the two retrograde satellites S IX Phoebe (S = −2.5±0.4 %/100nm) and S XXV Mundilfari...

Chaos and the Effects of Planetary Migration on the Orbit of S/2000 S5 Kiviuq

Among the many new irregular satellites that have been discovered in the last 5 years, five or more are in the so-called Kozai resonance. Because of solar perturbations, the argument of pericenter ! of a satellite usually precesses from 0 to 360 . However, at inclinations higher than ’39N3 and lower than ’140N7, a new kind of behavior occurs for which the argument of pericenter oscillates aroun...
